No Interest Loans | N.I.L | nilsnsw.org.au

In 1981, the Good Shepherd Sisters started the first No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) through Good Shepherd Youth & Family Service in Victoria. The program offered men and women no interest loans to purchase essential household items.

The NILS model aimed to:

Make cash available as a loan not as charity.
Show respect for clients by entering into a professional business relationship – a formal loan agreement.
Educate clients to negotiate a loan and, importantly, create a system that would make it easy to pay it back.
Charge no interest and encourage people to return the money so that their friends and neighbours may also benefit.
It was not an easy start. There were those who were against the idea, arguing that such a scheme would never work and the money would just disappear.

NILS has gone from strength to strength, however, and is now delivered through more than 220 accredited providers at over 400 locations around Australia.
